Buccaneer Lounge, Sierra Madre, CA

Another night, another show.

The Buccaneer Lounge, located in Sierra Madre is a pirate themed bar. This means that there are paintings of pirates on the walls. The bar is located on the main street, along with a lot of other retail stores. So the bar has a relatively narrow width, and stretches out back for additional space. There are some challenges associated with playing in this bar. There is no stage. The band sets up across from the bar, facing the bar. So, anyone walking into this venue from the front, needs to walk between the bar and the band to get to the back to play pool. There is a line of tables and chairs between the bar and the wall that the band lines up against to set up. I heard someone describe this set up as firing squad lineup. On the positive side, the bands do get paid. This venue has regular customers, who appreciate having live music. Because of the small size of the club, the audience can talk with the band while they are playing, making this a very friendly way to see a band perform.

First up, was the Silver Surfers. Since no one was going to be singing tonight, the club did NOT set up their P.A. The Silver Surfers are 1 drummer, 1 bassist, 2 guitarists, and no singer. They performed mostly cover tunes (most of which I was familiar with) and a few that are less frequently performed. I had taped them about a month ago, (August 9, 2008) at the Purple Orchid, so I didn't need to ask permission to record them. Not only had the leader of the band listened to the CD I made for them at the last show, he had passed it around so that everyone in the band had a chance to listen to their performance. Their comments about the recording, were fairly standard, they liked the recording (they wanted me to record them again this night), they hadn't realized how they sounded (they liked it), and they were able to notice the mistakes they made while playing.

http://www.insectsurfers.com/ Next (and last) up, was the Insect Surfers. They have the same lineup as the last band, 1 drummer, 1 bassist, 2 guitarists, and no singer. There were no substitutions for missing members this night. (The Insect Surfers have a policy of having backup musicians for everyone except the leader.) While the Insect Surfers had the same lineup as the Silver Surfers, their sound is very different. While there was no microphone, the leader, would shout out the song titles and talked with the audience between songs. The Insect Surfers performed tunes from all three of their studio CDs, as well as a few new tunes they haven't had a chance to put onto CD yet.

And for those who don't know, I am the official audio recorder and sound archivist for Insect Surfers. I have recorded most of their shows since 1996. My recording of a live performance in June 2004 has become their Lyve In The Valley Of The Sun which was released in time for the bands 20th anniversary. These days, I also manage and host their web site, I manage their live show announcements as well as helping with merchandise sales.
